A touch of emotion and the spirit of love flow through all of Elizabeth Silks art, communicating unspoken, soul-felt words.

Elizabeth's passion to reach and touch the soul is apparent in the intensity that is reflected in the eyes of her spirits and animals. The eyes are the windows to the soul. Love, compassion, pride, despair, anger, fear, introspection, understanding, intimacy, passion and freedom all are explored in Elizabeth's creations. Careful attention is paid to evoke a unique response from every individual that casts eyes on her work. The complexity of human emotion relays a feeling of fulfillment.

In her own words, "Love is the basic ingredient; do all things with love and your creation will be of the purest form. There is a magnificent feeling of fulfillment when seemingly from nothing appears onto canvas an image from the soul."

Acceptance

While listening to music I came to a clean canvas with no expectations of what would evolve. This painting flowed without any effort whatsoever.

The figure appeared to be a woman almost floating upward, her hair showing the direction of her movement and her face exuded tranquility, peace and surrender. The total absence of fear came to mind; not unlike the eagle. When describing the painting to onlookers I described her as in total acceptance to all the world offers, a total faith in whatever is meant to be.

A man came into the gallery one day and told me that he works in a hospice and helps with death and dying. Upon seeing this painting, he told me that this painting would have a healing effect, for just to gaze upon her face you would realize pure faith.

Apache Boy

Apache boy was from a live model who is a Mesqueliron Apache who lived in Las Vegas. I found his looks to be intriguing and asked to take some pictures of him to do a painting. It isn't often that I find the perfect model Indian, so I jumped at the opportunity. People really liked this picture... a kind of untamable spirit.

Fantasy Brave

Fantasy brave is a fantasy Indian brought about by my imagination... the strength and beauty of a warrior brave. The deer on the brave's shield represents the gentle warrior; strength through humility rather than pride.

Little Eagle

Little Eagle was from a portrait photograph that I noticed in a book. However, I changed her completely from what I believe was Italian to Indian, and added the feather to represent women's strength. She has eagle eyes, and an intense penetrating glare... not unlike the snake (my power animal).

Personal Empowerment

Personal Empowerment is a "vision" picture, portraying strength and power of the spirit. The Native Americans view the horse as representing freedom and strength. The female spirit amongst the horses forges ahead in life with strength and freedom.  If you pay close attention to her face, you will see the serenity, confidence and determination of the human spirit.

Rebirth

Rebirth is a significantly different painting than I have ever done before. I do not know what possessed me to paint myself in a fetal position, in a womb, in the universe! However, I was happy with the outcome, and she became my Rebirth.

Self Love

Self Love came to me as a vision painting whilst painting in a gallery in Tlaquepaque in Sedona. Originally it was to be "the lovers", as I wanted to express the passion and oneness of two people in love. However, as the painting progressed, I was unable to make this unfold; the painting had a mind of its own.

Slowly, after a lot of aggravation from not getting what I wanted, I let go. Gradually, the male figure in the painting disappeared and the woman turned and held herself. Then appeared a white dove hovering in front of her, holding "forget me not" flowers in its beak, inspiring the words The loving acceptance that we so deeply yearn for cannot be ours until you have that gift to give yourself (a quote from Marriann Williamson, author of "A Return to Love").

This became my favorite painting, and I've used it for all my flyers & business cards. Notice the two intertwined circles in the lower right corner of the painting, representing relationships... allow yourselves to be bound and committed to each other, but retain your individual identity.

The King

I have always had a fascination for big cats. Not long ago, I had the opportunity to play with a "Ligre" (lion-tiger mix); it scared me half to death knowing she could attack at any time. Although she was fully trained, it didn't stop the fear; one little playful nudge from her huge paws whilst on her back knocked me flying to the ground. The funny thing was that when walking with her, I kept a safe distance behind (like I could outrun a cat)!

Visions of Awareness

Visions of Awareness was painted whilst still living in Las Vegas, just before I moved to Sedona. After visiting Sedona for several years, the energy of this beautiful place changed the direction of my paintings forever. When wondering what market I was to focus on, it came to me during a guided meditation to "do what you love and people will buy it" - in essence, just to let go and let God guide me. This painting was the first big sale in Sedona. I was excited to see where it would lead.

The female spirit in the center of the painting is me. There is a wolf, an eagle, and if you look really closely, a hummingbird. When looking up all the animals and their meaning, I discovered that the wolf is the teacher, the eagle is strength and leadership, and the hummingbird represents the harbinger of joy. All in all, I was to be instrumental in helping the human spirit redirect their lives to that of joy, peace and happiness.

Since then, I have had the unique opportunity of doing personal vision pictures for many people with wonderful results here in Sedona.

Most of Elizabeth's paintings are spiritually inspired, with the exception of the occasional portrait or commissioned piece. Many paintings are spontaneous in their creative and evolutionary direction, with only music for inspiration. A lot of the time, the music would be Native American or New Age meditation; however, once in a while, U2 and loud rock & roll! But whatever the motivation or creative catalyst may be, an image, a message, and part of Elizabeth's own identity always flow onto the canvas from her heart and spirit; sometimes effortlessly, sometimes with great concentration, emotion, and maybe even a few tears... but always with sincerity, free expression, and boundless enthusiasm!

Elizabeth has a unique style that has been described as 'ethereal'. However, she describes it as being 'Emotion and Motion'. Movement is very evident in her work to depict the passionate life. Elizabeth has also been described as portraying sensuality through her work. In answer to this, she states, "We are sentient beings. So many people believe that sensuality and spirituality cannot co-exist. However, I believe they are one in the same. Passion is more than just a feeling; it is who we are!"

Elizabeth's unique painting style is no different from that of any other great artist, in the sense that the tiny details of her brush strokes, the layering and flow of the strokes, and the way in which paint and color are distributed within brush strokes can be as distinctive as fingerprints, and can be relied upon by experts to declare, 'This is an Elizabeth Silk Original'! Because of this 'signature' style, Elizabeth's work will always be recognizable as her own, and its largely responsible for the passionate, flowing nature of her images, appearing as though the paint is still liquid and forever in motion on the canvas.

As a child, Elizabeth was raised by her grandparents in Merseyside, England (Liverpool). Her parents were an English mother and a Native American Sioux father. In her adult life, Elizabeth has followed her Native American Ancestral beliefs. She portrays American Indians not as victims, but as passionate, proud and strong. Romancing a freedom of their soul that lives through us all, Elizabeth awakens an undaunted Spirit and allows it to emerge.

Elizabeth has studied at the Laird School of Art, Wallasey Art College, and Liverpool Polytechnic. She has shown her art in and around the United States and Europe, including the prestigious Liverpool Art Gallery.

Since the mid-1990s, Elizabeth has lived in Sedona, Arizona, where many artists are concentrated because of the energy that is so conducive to creativity. Elizabeth's style changed dramatically upon being introduced to Sedona, from stoic to free, by a message she received when struggling with what to promote: "Do what you love, with only love in mind, and people who see it will want it."

The first year, it proved to be so. Tourists loved her work and were moved so deeply that they wished to meet the artist personally, and she often obliged. "To be able to make such a significant impression on people is terrific!"

Elizabeth has recently brought her sculpting ability to the direction of Spirit. As quoted by Elizabeth, "Sculpting is really exciting. The face of what I believe to be Indian Spirits changes form many times. I have to surrender and let them emerge without force. Their beings are proud and enigmatic."
